Information Architecture (IA)

As defined in Wikipedia, "Information architecture is the categorization of information into a coherent structure, preferably one that the most people can understand quickly, if not inherently. It's usually hierarchical, but can have other structures, such as concentric or even chaotic."

The common mistake is to cram a lot of information on a page. There is a direct correlation between aversion to read and content size. Newspaper columns are designed in such a manner that it takes 3 to 4 eye movements to read a line. Reading speed decreases as lines lengthen. So, typographic legibility involves selecting fonts with higher x heights (the "x" height defined as the height of the lower case character), shorter lines and easily digestible pages. Using IA, cutting data into smaller chunks and allowing the user to drill down, across or up will facilitate ease of use and functionality.

The beauty of this is that it creates more pages. Search engines like content. The more pages a site has, the more “authority” it is bestowed. In addition, it also allows for increase page relevance and better search result rankings.
